Overview

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's ZEPSTM brand zero emission power and steam system produces clean steam and power from combustion of low-value feedstock, such as petroleum coke, coal, and biomass. With an oxygen fired, fluidized-bed combustor, we utilize high-temperature heat to achieve high-power cycle efficiencies. The system also captures all carbon dioxide emissions in pure pressurized form, and enables cost-effective sequestration of the carbon dioxide or its use for enhanced oil recovery. The overall result is a cost efficient means of steam or electrical production.

Characteristics

Zero-emission system for production of steam, power, and carbon dioxide with oxygen-fired fluidized bed combustor.

Design Benefits

  • Produces steam for heavy oil recovery using low value feedstock (petcoke, coal, biomass)
  • Produces pure carbon dioxide for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR)
  • Produces electric power with zero emissions

Markets

  • Heavy oil production (once-through steam)
  • Light oil production (carbon dioxide floods)
  • Electric power generation

Status

  • 1980s - Long-life, in-bed heat exchangers are demonstrated
  • 2009 - Concept is modified for oxygen-firing rather than air
  • 2010 - Work with oil company launch customer underway

Next Step

  • Build and operate demonstration plant.
