Overview

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's Hydrogen Generator uses an innovative one-step process for large-scale hydrogen production. Our scalable, modular design delivers a 90 percent reduction in size compared to steam methane reformers (SMRs), making it a compact and space-efficient solution for fuel, chemical and fertilizer production. With 30-40 percent lower equipment costs, and 15-35 percent increase in hydrogen efficiency, it enables lower cost hydrogen production. By decreasing carbon dioxide emissions and natural gas consumption, while capturing concentrated carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne’s Hydrogen Generator provides a cost-effective means for hydrogen production with the potential for low carbon footprint energy.

Characteristics

System for large-scale production of hydrogen from natural gas and other feedstock.
Replaces Steam Methane Reformers (SMR)

Design Benefits

  • Compact one-step process with 90 percent size reduction
  • 30-40 percent lower equipment costs
  • 15-35 percent increased hydrogen efficiency
  • Concentrated carbon dioxide for sequestration
  • Wide range of capacity (approximately 1 Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day , or MMSCFD to 100 MMSCFD)
  • Direct hydrogen production, no shift required
  • No high-temperature SMR furnace box required
  • Steam neutral, no production of excess steam
  • Smaller PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) system
  • Sulfur tolerant

Markets
  • H2 for refineries, bio-refineries and chemicals
  • Hydrogen for field upgrading of oil and oil sands
  • Carbon dioxide and nitrogen for oil well pressurization, enhanced recovery of oil & coalbed methane

Milestones

  • 2003 - Proof of Concept tests completed
  • 2006 - Pilot Plant operation begins (20 MSCFD)
  • 2009 - Demo Plant defined (5 MMSCFD)

Next Step

  • Build and operate demonstration plant.
