Following the launch of the final Space Shuttle mission, STS-135, Commander Chris Ferguson made the following remarks to the spacecraft communicator (CAPCOM) at Johnson Space Center in Houston after powering down the Main Propulsion System (MPS) for the last time.

“MPS power down is complete and with that we would like to thank the Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne team and the SSME team for their flawless performance over this 30-year shuttle flight history.”

“135 flights…It’s a 7,000-pound engine that puts out one-half million pounds of thrust and they pitched the equivalent of a perfect game every flight.”

“From everyone who has ridden on these rockets, we thank you.”

The CAPCOM commander responded to Ferguson with:

“We concur with that assessment Atlantis. Good, pertinent and true words.”
