Pratt & Whitney's Turbine Coating Services Enhances High-Tech Coating for Singapore Repair Operations

SINGAPORE, Wednesday, February 17, 2016

Pratt & Whitney's Singapore-based blades and vanes repair specialist, Turbine Coating Services Pte Ltd, has enhanced Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EBPVD) capabilities for its operations in Singapore. The technology allows for the application of thermal barrier ceramic coatings on engine components to protect surfaces against corrosive environments, while increasing the length of time between repairs for these components. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

"We are committed to incorporating high-technology capabilities into our maintenance and repair services to provide the best value to our customers, and the advancement of EBPVD is part of that commitment," said Kevin Kirkpatrick, executive director, Pratt & Whitney Aftermarket Operations Singapore & Taiwan, and managing director, Eagle Services Asia Pte Ltd. "Through the use of cutting-edge technologies, we aim to increase the quality of our operations and deliver tangible benefits, such as longer time on wing, to our customers."

The improved EBPVD capability involves high-end ceramic coating equipment with advanced cutting-edge thermal barrier ceramic coating technologies, and will be capable of applying coatings for existing engines and the new Geared Turbofan™ engines. It offers faster coating cycles, almost doubling the capacity of the current machine, while maintaining quality; and increasing present productivity and capacity for coating high pressure turbine blades and vanes.

The latest machine will be commissioned at the Pratt & Whitney Turbine Coating Services Pte Ltd facility, making it the sole repair source with ceramic coating applications for V2500®, PW2000, PW4000 engines and Pratt & Whitney's new PurePower® Geared Turbofan engine family. This modernized EBPVD capability also equips the facility for the future with Pratt & Whitney's next generation product family engines.

The V2500 engine is offered through IAE International Aero Engines, an aero engine consortium led by Pratt & Whitney in collaboration with Pratt & Whitney Aero Engines International GmbH, Japanese Aero Engines Corporation and MTU Aero Engines.

Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines and auxiliary power units.
