Pratt & Whitney Canada (SEA) Embarks on Three-Year Cross Training Initiative with Temasek Polytechnic
First-of-its-kind partnership trains the trainers with tailored industry workshops
Pratt & Whitney Canada (SEA) Pte Ltd (P&WC SEA) and Temasek Polytechnic signed a three-year Memorandum of Agreement today, establishing a cross training partnership, aimed at developing and preparing industry-ready talent for the fast-growing aviation industry. P&WC SEA is an indirect subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation company (NYSE:UTX).
Unique to this collaboration is a 'Train the Trainer' aspect where P&WC SEA will provide Temasek Polytechnic lecturers with the same hands-on training that aircraft maintenance engineers in the field receive. Lecturers will be trained across topics such as 'PW100 Basic Engine Familiarization' and 'Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) Standard Practices Course' to help them develop and deliver aircraft engine maintenance workshops for final-year Temasek Polytechnic students pursuing a diploma in Aerospace Engineering. The workshops, jointly set up by P&WC SEA, will focus on delivering practical know-how on engine disassembly, cleaning, quality inspection and assembly. A PW100 engine will also be on loan to the polytechnic for training purposes.
"As a leading player in the local and international aviation industry, Pratt & Whitney Canada recognises the need to invest in developing a talent pool of future engineers who are industry ready when they enter the workforce. Through our 'Train the Trainer' approach, educators from Temasek Polytechnic will be exposed to industry requirements so that they are able to align the training accordingly. Our partnership with Temasek Polytechnic is a great example of how the industry and education institutions can work together to power the future," said Maria Valerio, vice president, Operations, Customer Service, Pratt & Whitney Canada.
Commenting on the collaboration with P&WC SEA, Lay-Tan Siok Lie, deputy principal of Temasek Polytechnic, said, "As part of Temasek Polytechnic's continuous efforts to equip our students with skills that meet industry standards, we are always actively seeking partnerships with sector specialists to jointly offer industry-certified training. Our partnership with Pratt & Whitney Canada South East Asia extends our capability to provide quality aviation training in engine MRO, where there is a constant demand for skilled manpower."
As part of this cross-training agreement and the company's continuing education and training, Temasek Polytechnic will in turn conduct workshops with P&WC SEA employees on theoretical modules such as 'Aircraft Maintenance Human Factors', 'Aviation Legislation' and 'Gas Turbine Engine Theory'. As a result of the training, employees will gain insights into current industry best practices and knowledge.
"With Asia becoming a growth engine for the global aviation industry, attracting and retaining talent are integral to a business' success. Our partnership with Temasek Polytechnic gives us access to some of Singapore's brightest minds and will serve as a platform to keep our employees relevant to industry approaches and trends. We're confident that this effort will develop further talent to maintain Singapore's leadership position as a regional aviation hub," said William C. Kircher, vice president, Singapore Overhaul & Repair and President, UTC Aerospace Singapore.
