Pratt & Whitney Establishes Engineering Center of Excellence at Iowa State University

EAST HARTFORD, Conn, Monday, May 21, 2012

Pratt & Whitney has established a strategic research partnership with Iowa State University to improve gas turbine engine technology for aerospace applications. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company.

The five-year initiative establishes a Pratt & Whitney Center of Excellence at Iowa State University. Research projects will focus on three areas:

  • Non-destructive evaluation of engine components.
  • Materials design and testing, including coatings and high-temperature materials that can withstand corrosion, in collaboration with researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory, which is operated under contract by Iowa State University.
  • Aerospace thermal systems – improving how engines perform under a variety of conditions.

“We are very excited about the addition of Iowa State University’s College of Engineering as one of our University Centers of Excellence. Pratt & Whitney is committed to differentiating our products with technology through investment in fundamental research and development. Iowa State has outstanding technical capabilities in the aerospace field. The relationship will also enable Pratt & Whitney to work closely with the innovative faculty, scientists and students at Iowa State University and at The Ames Laboratory,” said Al Brockett, vice president, Pratt & Whitney Engineering-Module Centers.

“Our partnership with Pratt & Whitney – in addition to the research programs it will generate – improves the College’s ability to develop new technologies for the aerospace industry and promote career opportunities for engineering students,” said Jonathan Wickert, dean of Iowa State University’s engineering college.
