Pratt & Whitney Power Systems Breaks Into the Asian Market with First Orders of the PURECYCLE® ORC Power System

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Monday, August 30, 2010

Pratt & Whitney Power Systems is breaking into the Asian market with the sale of two modular PURECYCLE® Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) units near Taipei, Taiwan, with the capacity to generate up to 500kW of geothermal power. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company.

The Taiwan Yilang Chingshui Geothermal Project, located in Yilang County near Taipei, Taiwan, is expected to be operational by the end of the year. In this installation, existing low temperature geothermal resources of about 130˚C will be used to fuel two PureCycle systems and generate 500 kW of net power. The project is managed by Global Power Source Co., Ltd., and YANKEE Power & Energy Saving Technology Company. The PureCycle power systems will allow the Taiwan Yilang Chingshui Geothermal Project to produce electrical power for the first time in 25 years.

"Pratt & Whitney Power Systems' PureCycle Organic Rankine Cycle units will create a new source of clean, renewable power for the area."

"There is an energy shortage in Taiwan and geothermal energy is an important source of renewable power," said Mr. Bering Wang, president GPSC, which is the turnkey provider for the project. "The PureCycle system is the right equipment for this project because it uses low and medium temperature hot water to generate electrical power and replaces the traditional steam generator units operating with higher temperature steam, which caused the closure of a geothermal power plant at the site in the past. This project will showcase the bright prospects for geothermal energy development in Taiwan."

"Taiwan has the potential to generate 1,000 MW of electrical power from geothermal resources," said Mr. Yu Chi Hung, chairman of YANKEE Power & Energy Saving Technology Company. "In geothermal power generation, Taiwan is still in the learning phase. Taiwan Yilang Chingshui Geothermal Project has the potential to generate more than 60 MW of electrical power using hot spring water. It is expected the introduction of renewable energy equipment with the world's latest technologies will contribute to energy efficiency and emission reduction efforts in Taiwan while establishing a safe, reliable and efficient power supply for future generations."

With its majority ownership of Italy-based Turboden, Pratt & Whitney Power Systems offers a spectrum of ORC products ranging in output power from 280 kW to 10 MW of renewable power. The PureCycle system is a closed-cycle process that uses relatively low to moderate temperature hot water resources. Turboden's products use a similar process to provide up to 10 MW of energy. These systems are driven by a simple evaporation process and are entirely enclosed, which means they produce virtually no emissions.
