Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Propulsion System Successfully Maneuvers THAAD Interceptor to Destroy Ballistic Missile Target

CANOGA PARK, Calif., Tuesday, June 29, 2010

The Divert and Attitude Control System (DACS) developed by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne successfully positioned a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor that successfully destroyed an incoming Short Range Ballistic Missile (SRBM) in the low endo-atmosphere. Today's flight test was conducted at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne is under contract to produce the DACS for Lockheed Martin [NYSE:LMT], the THAAD prime contractor and systems integrator. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company.

"The interceptor successfully intercepted the SRBM," said Craig Larson, THAAD program manager, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. "THAAD continues to demonstrate its ability to defend against incoming ballistic missiles both inside and outside Earth's atmosphere, proving its ability to protect U.S. and allied forces worldwide."

The DACS is a high-precision, quick-reaction propulsion system that positions the THAAD interceptor to destroy incoming enemy ballistic missiles. THAAD is designed to protect U.S. and allied forces against short- to medium-range ballistic missiles in the terminal or final phase of flight.
