Pratt & Whitney Wins Corporate Team Trophy in Citizens Bank 5K
Middletown's Main Street was brimming with activity on July 10, as live music blared and street performers juggled, hula hooped and performed acrobatic stunts of all kinds. The festivities were part of the lively family atmosphere of the Citizens Bank 5K Family Fun Run, which boasted approximately 350 adult runners and nearly 75 child runners in the half-mile Kids Fun Run.
Besides individual winners in male and female categories and nine age categories, the races also featured a Corporate Team Competition, sponsored by Pratt & Whitney. Companies were able to enter employee teams of unlimited numbers, with the fastest three runners determining team time. The winning team just so happened to be Pratt & Whitney, which won the honor of displaying the Pratt & Whitney team trophy until next year's race.
Lane Thornton was the first Pratt & Whitney team member to cross the finish line with an impressive time of 18:06, making him the sixth individual to cross the line. Other notable winners included Middletown resident Rob Weston, who came in first place with 16:54, and Bridgid Selfors, who was the first female to cross the finish line. Fourteen-year old Selfors finished 17th overall with a time of 19:00 and was followed closely by her father, Pratt & Whitney's Brian Selfors, at 19:05.
The male and female winners of the Kids Fun Run were 11-year old Jake Ireland with a time of 2:53, and 10-year old Ema McMurray with 3:00.
Money raised from the Citizens Bank 5K Summer Fun Run have benefited organizations including the Northern Middlesex Habitat for Humanity, the YMCA of Northern Middlesex County, the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce Mentor Program, Amazing Grace, Art Farm, Middlesex Bike Club, Kiwanis Club, Oddfellows Playhouse and Warm the Children.
