In cooperation with our parent company United Technologies Corp. (UTC), Pratt & Whitney sets aggressive EH&S goals that we continually meet and exceed.
In 2007, UTC embarked on a four-year program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 12 percent, water consumption by 10 percent, air emissions by 20 percent and non-recyclable waste by 30 percent compared with 2006. These metrics are not normalized for business volumes—which are growing—meaning that the per-product emissions will be dropping even more.
Pratt & Whitney’s greenhouse gas reduction target is equivalent to taking more than 16,000 cars off the road. In the first two years of the program, Pratt & Whitney has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 11 percent, water usage by 13 percent, air emissions by 49 percent, and non-recyclable waste by 4 percent.
Pratt & Whitney is doing its part to reduce the human impact on climate change by providing our customers with the most environmentally-responsible products, services and operations, and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally.
Pratt & Whitney is a member of several leading industry and non-profit organizations that research, promote and advance opportunities in green technologies and environmental sustainability.
We have also been recognized and awarded for our environmental programs. Pratt & Whitney partners with industry and government to develop solutions that will reduce the aerospace industry’s impact on global warming.
In 2007, our Commercial Engines & Global Services North Berwick Parts Center (NBPC) was one of twelve Maine companies to receive a STEP-UP award for environmental excellence from the state’s governor. Based on an agreement between an individual business and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), STEP-UP is a program companies follow to be formally recognized as environmental leaders in the business community.
Similarly, in 2004, Pratt & Whitney’s Michigan-based AutoAir unit was honored with a Clean Corporate Citizen award after it voluntarily joined the U.S. Department of Environmental Quality as a partner in the Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership.
Launched in 2008, Pratt & Whitney’s Green Power Grant Program provides grant money to U.S. employee volunteers for clean-up, habitat restoration and environmental education programs.
Pratt & Whitney's Revert Management Program began operating out of its East Hartford, Conn., headquarters more than 10 years ago.
The program strives to capture scrap aerospace engine materials and return as much of this material as is feasible to the aerospace industry supply base for reuse.
Today, only a small fraction of aircraft engine material worldwide is recycled and returned for use within the industry. Aerospace metals are ideal for reuse since they can generally be recycled forever without significant degradation to their integrity.
The Revert Management Program benefits the environment because it can eliminate the need to produce products solely with raw material. As a result, the amount of raw materials that need to be mined, and energy required, is reduced. This, in turn, lessens the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere.
During the past three years, our Revert Management Program has processed and shipped more than 600,000 pounds of material and returned it directly to Pratt & Whitney suppliers resulting in companywide savings of approximately $5 million.
Pratt & Whitney is also currently an active member of the Aircraft Fleet Recycling Association (AFRA), a Boeing-led consortium that strives to recycle aircraft, aircraft components, engine material, and other materials critical to the aerospace industry.
