COMPACT GASIFIER

Compact Gasifier

Gasification technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions, accelerates the transition to renewable resources, and increases U.S. energy security.

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne's Compact Gasifier is 90 percent smaller and 35 percent more efficient than conventional gasification systems, leading to reduced equipment costs and increased fuel production. By converting mixtures of biomass waste, coal, and combustible waste while capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide, our system produces carbon-neutral and carbon-negative fuels and electricity, with minimum space requirements.

Design Benefits
  • • 90 percent size reduction (gasifier)
  • • 50 percent lower cost (gasification system)
  • • 99 percent carbon conversion
  • • 99 percent availability (gasification system)
  • • Capability for near-zero emissions
Markets
  • • Hydrogen for refineries and oil sands upgraders
  • • Synfuels and chemicals production
  • • Electric power generation (specifically for low emission or green requirements)
Milestones
  • • 1980s—Proof of Concept is demonstrated
  • • 2009—Pilot plant operation begins
  • • 2009—Feed system test facility operating
  • • 2010—Dry solids pump tests begin
Next Step
